This survey was developed with guidance from Georgetown University faculty. It gathers basic data about our community’s various languages and will inform strategies to help ensure that Quechua thrives for our future generations. We hope that this survey and our work also inspires inheritors of other Native languages.

About the Survey
What is this about?
This is an initiative for Bolivians in the DMV (D.C. metro area, including Virginia and Maryland).
The “Survey: Quechua and Native Languages in the Bolivian DMV” gathers basic data about Native/Indigenous language use in our community.
Survey results will help guide strategies to support the intergenerational survival of Quechua language in our community.
It is an effort from within the community, for the community.
This survey was devised with guidance from faculty at Georgetown University, a prestigious university in Washington, D.C.
What if I do not speak Quechua? Do you still want to hear from me?
Yes! We want to hear from everyone in our community. The more people who answer, the more accurate the results will be.
The more accurate the results, the better positioned we will be to support our culture for your future generations.
Who is asking me this?
Four daughters of the DMV Bolivian community donate their professional skills and time to drive The Quechua Project’s work. Link to Who We Are.
Between us, we have decades of professional, educational, and lived community experience spanning various industries, degrees, foci, and relationships with our Quechua and Indigenous cultures and with our community.
Why are you asking me this?
In order to devise strategies to ensure Quechua’s future survival in our community, we must understand our entire community system, including our diverse stories and backgrounds.
Additionally, to measure our success in coming years, we need to understand the community’s current attitudes towards and usage of Quechua and Native languages.

What will you do with my responses?
The Survey is in Qualtrics, a best-in-class survey software. Its use is made possible by Georgetown University.
Your answers will be anonymized, meaning that Qualtrics will not retain any personally identifying information, such as names or IP addresses.
We will combine everyone’s answers to look for patterns that tell us about our community.
For example, what percentage of people under a certain age speak Quechua or another Native language?
Does this survey protect my privacy?
Yes. Qualtrics is a best-in-class survey software and is used by academic institutions.
In its reports to us, Qualtrics disconnects your response from your IP address. We do not know who answers nor what they answered.

Why should I teach my child Quechua or my family’s Native language? How does it benefit them?
Community and Heritage
You are among the last people in the world to inherit a Native American language. Researchers classify all of them as endangered.
Honor the legacy of parents, grandparents, and so on. Gift your children with their memory and inheritance, before it is too late.
Language is key to your child’s connection to their culture and community. Many children later in life wish their parents had taught them their Native language.
By pushing back against centuries of language discrimination, you help pursue social justice.
Multilingualism Benefits
Scientists affirm the benefits of multilingualism—knowing several languages (1):
Advantages in executive control, the ability to perform complex tasks
Academic success
Psychosocial adjustment for teens
Quality family relationships
Protection against cognitive decline
The EU’s language policy is for all citizens to speak at least three languages. In 10 EU countries, over half of the population speaks at least three languages. (2) These facts point to the recognition of the benefits of multilingualism, not just bilingualism.

¿De qué se trata la encuesta?
Esta es una iniciativa para los bolivianos en el DMV (área metropolitana de Washington, D.C., incluyendo Virginia y Maryland).
La “Encuesta: Quechua y Lenguas Nativas en el DMV Boliviano” recopila datos básicos sobre lenguas Nativas/Indígenas en nuestra comunidad.

Entre nosotras, tenemos décadas de experiencia profesional y educativa y comunitaria que abarca diversas industrias, licenciaturas, maestrías, enfoques, y relaciones con nuestra cultura indígena y con nuestra comunidad.
¿Por qué me preguntan todo esto?
Para diseñar estrategias que aseguran la sobrevivencia del Quechua para las futuras generaciones en nuestra comunidad, requiere primero entender nuestra comunidad como sistema holístico, incluyendo sus diversas historias y herencias.
Adicionalmente, para poder medir en futuros años cuánto se ha logrado, necesitamos entender en la actualidad cuáles son las actitudes hacia y el uso del Quechua y otras lenguas Nativas dentro de nuestra comunidad.

Comunidad y Herencia Cultural
Eres de las últimas personas en el mundo que han heredado una lengua Nativa Americana. Se clasifica a todas estas lenguas como “en riesgo.”
Honra el legado de tus padres y abuelos. Regálales a tus hijos la memoria y herencia cultural, antes de que sea muy tarde.
El idioma es clave para que tus hijos tengan una conexión con su cultura y comunidad. Muchos hijos lamentan que sus padres no les hayan enseñado su idioma Nativo.
Al rechazar siglos de discriminación lingüística, apoyas la justicia.
Beneficios del Multilingualismo

La política de la Unión Europea (UE) es que sus ciudadanos hablen al menos tres idiomas. En 10 países de la UE, más de la mitad de la población habla al menos tres idiomas. Estos hechos destacan el reconocimiento de los beneficios del multilingüismo, aún más que el bilingüismo. (2)
